Journalist-poet Gokul Sarma no more

DOOMDOOMA, Sept 4 - Veteran journalist and poet Gokul Sarma of Margherita died at a nursing home in Dibrugarh on Friday. He was 78.

Sarma was the president of the Tinsukia District Journalists� Association (TDJA) for two consecutive terms (1991-93, 1993-95). He was the Margherita correspondent of Dainik Asam (1972-1999) and Ajir Asom (1988-2005) and recipient of journalists� pension announced on the eve of Independence Day this year. He was also a renowned poet and was conferred the title of �Dihingporia Kabi�.

Sarma was ailing for some time and was shifted to Dibrugarh for better treatment only on Friday morning. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.

The news of his demise reached the Tinsukia Press Club where a meeting of the TDJA was in progress. The meeting was cut short and a condolence meeting was held. Various organisations including TDJA, press clubs of Doomdooma, Digboi, Tinsukia, Saikhowa, Kakopathar, Sadiya and Margherita Journalists� Association besides Assam Union of Working Journalists, Dainik Janambhumi Group, Tinsukia Zila Sahityasewi Mancha, and NFRMU, expressed condolences.
