GUWAHATI, March 22 - Former Minister in the Asom Gana Parishad-led State Government and a former Lok Sabha member from Tezpur Lok Sabha Constituency Joseph Toppo died at a city hospital around 3:30 pm today. He was hospitalised sometime back, following an incident of cardiac arrest. At the time of his death, Toppo was a general secretary of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He was born on May 2, 1954 and was 61 years at the time of his demise.

Between 1996 and 2009, Toppo represented the Dhekiajuli Legislative Assembly Constituency for three terms and in 2009, he was elected to the Lok Sabha. He served as a Minister of State for Labour and Employment in the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led Ministry of the State in 1996.

The AGP has announced a three-day mourning following Toppo�s demise and said in a statement that its party flag would fly half- mast at its headquarters and district offices during this period.

AGP president Atul Bora has mourned the death of Toppo and said in a condolence message that the regional party has lost a very committed and responsible leader. Toppo�s death is an irreparable loss to the AGP, Bora said.

Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has also mourned the death of Toppo. In a condolence message, he said that Toppo was a dedicated follower of regionalism.

Former AGP president Brindaban Goswami, former MPs Birendra Prasad Baishya and Kumar Dipak Das, Tezpur district committee of the AGP, Shram Parishad, Assam, Asom Yuva Parishad, Asom Mahila Parishad and the employees of the AGP headquarters here have also mourned the death of the former Minister.
