Jorhat Medical College admissions begin

JORHAT, July 31 � The admission procedure of the first batch of MBBS students at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital began on Friday.

As many as 85 candidates selected through the State-level Common Entrance Examination (CEE) are going to enroll this year. The remaining 15 seats in the college are reserved as the All-India Quota. Classes will start in the college from August 9.

In an exclusive interview to The Assam Tribune, Dr Dhruba Jyoti Borah, Principal, Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, said: �We are fully prepared to start the activities of the educational wing of JMC�.

He also informed that as many as 112 staff, including clinical staff, demonstrators and teaching staff, had already been appointed. The Medical Council of India has recommended that the number of staff should be more than 57 for the first year. �We have more than enough employees and ready accommodation for this year�, Dr Borah said, �and the requirement for the subsequent years will be fulfilled in the due course of time�.

The door of the hostels will be opened on August 7 and it will start functioning with the dinner in the evening for its boarders. The boys� hostel will have accommodation for 60 boys and girls� hostel will accommodate 34 girls.

Dr Borah said that quality of education would be maintained strictly for which the required facilities would be provided to the students from the very beginning.

There are about 2500 books and journals in the central library which according to him would help the students a lot. The computer section in the library is also ready with 50 brand new computers. Moreover, the museum is also equipped with several specimens and teaching aids.

Though the MCI recommended only two classrooms, the Jorhat Medical College already has four classrooms.

The ongoing construction works will be completed by March 2011, he added.

He further added that a paramedical institute would be started in the college this year. As many as 100 students will be enrolled in its various diploma courses. Among them 40 will be admitted in Laboratory Technician course, 20 in Radiography course, 5 in CT technician course, 5 in MRI technician course and 10 in ECG technician course.

Moreover, the �Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation� Department, which will be introduced in the medical college shortly, will provide physiotherapy, speech therapy and the like to patients.

�The new MRI machine has arrived and we will install it within a month. A new CT scanner machine will be bought soon and will be installed in a newly constructed building within two months,� the principal of JMC added.
