Joint mock drill on rail mishaps and response conducted

GUWAHATI, Dec 16 - In yet another move to assess disaster preparedness of important public places, a joint mock exercise on rail accidents and response was conducted today at Azara railway station, Guwahati.

A rescue team of the 1st Battalion of NDRF participated in the exercise.

During the drill, NDRF personnel demonstrated cutting penetration and rescue techniques in derailed accidental railway coach by using equipment like gas cutters, hydraulic cutters, spreaders and rotary rescue saw. Modern communication systems including satellite phones and Quick Deployment Antenna (QDA) were installed in addition to high frequency (HF) and very high frequency (VHF) sets for communication.

The exercise was jointly conducted with NF Railway�s Rangiya Division.

The capabilities of all equipment and their limitations were explained to all rescuers and training was imparted actually on the ground. During the mock drill, effective methodology and response drills was rehearsed and practised to ensure effective, speedy and safe operation.

This exercise also ensured community participation in initial response work to extricate and transport minor injured or lightly trapped victims while maintaining personal safety during rail accidents.
