JMB operative sent to 12-day police custody

AGARTALA, March 6 - A Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operative, who was arrested in West Tripura district by the State police on Tuesday, was sent to 12-day police custody today for interrogation.

After preliminary interrogation by top intelligence officials, Nazir Sheikh (25), a resident of Murshidabad district of West Bengal, was produced in a local court by the police, seeking his custody. After hearing the case, the court sent him to 12-day police custody for intensive interrogation.

The JMB is a Bangladesh-based jihadi group which is trying to create unrest in the North Eastern region. Based on intelligence inputs, the JMB operative was nabbed from the West Tripura district on Tuesday afternoon, said DGP AK Shukla at a press conference at the police headquarters on Tuesday night. �Some more JMB operatives are staying in the State and we are on the move to apprehend them at the earliest,� he added.

According to the DGP, Nazir Sheikh is an expert in improvised explosive device (IED) and the police is trying to find out the JMB�s modus operandi. Shukla said that the arrest of the JMB operative is significant in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

Source said a team of the NIA is expected to arrive here to interrogate Nazir, who had sneaked into the State and managed to get employment in a construction company.
