GUWAHATI, Oct 30 - Senior Indian Administrative Officer (IAS) officer Jishnu Baruah was today appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Assam. Baruah will replace incumbent Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna, who is retiring on October 31. Baruah, a 1988-batch IAS officer (Assam-Meghalaya cadre) , is currently serving as the Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political), Revenue and Disaster Management and Assam Accord Implementation departments. He will take over the charge on Saturday.
Baruah has previously served in different capacities both in the State and New Delhi. Besides serving as the Deputy Commissioner of districts like NC Hills (1995-95) and Jorhat (1996-97), he was also appointed as the Managing Director, Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC). He had also been on Central deputation from 2001 to 2006 during which he had served as the Private Secretary to Union Minister of State for Commerce, Planning, Atomic Energy and Space along with Statistics and Programme Implementation. From 2014-2017, he served as the Joint Secretary of Services, Vigilance and Training (Government of India).
Sources said that although names of several senior IAS officers were doing rounds, Baruahs emerged as the unanimous choice.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, Baruah said that his priorities as the Chief Secretary would be to hold the BTAD elections in a proper manner and ensure the Accords are taken to a logical conclusion.
Giving impetus to revenue administration would be another area of priority, Baruah said.
