Jaypal Devalaya of Dingdingi village in Nalbari

NALBARI, April 17: The historic Jaypal Devalaya of Dingdingi village under Barbhag revenue circle in Nalbari district, built under the patronage of King Jaipal of the Pala dynasty and rebuilt during the reign of the Ahom kings, is on the verge of extinction due to government apathy.

The government has not even protected the historic temple, but the villagers have come together to preserve it with bamboo fences. No government has acted to preserve this historic religious manument. The villagers have been trying to keep this old heritage alive by providing bamboo fences besides performing puja regularly.

Dindingi is a small village of Barbhag Revenue Circle of Nalbari district. The Jaypal Devalaya is a royal temple. The temple is on the verge of destruction and the locals have resented the government apathy.

Most part of the Manikut of the temple has disappeared over time as it has gone underground. During the great earthquakes of 1897 and 1950, the main Manikut of the temple was covered by soil. The devotees regularly worship Lord Shiva in the manikut that is now located under the ground. The main Shiva Linga of the temple remains submerged under water during the rainy season.

The Jaypal Devalay is located on the banks of the Pagladia river. The temple was rebuilt during the reign of the Ahom king Shiva Singha.

Over time, the level of the adjacent areas have risen and only a small part of the main temple now stands above the ground. If neglected, the manikut of this historic temple may disappear soon. The government should take urgent measures to preserve it.
