Javed-Dhrubajyoti clinch badminton crowns

DERGAON, Jan 30 � The pair of Javed Ahmed and Dhrubajyoti Kalita of Jorhat clinched the championship title in the men�s doubles category of the 7th Suratram Khadaria Memorial Upper Assam Prize-money Badminton Championship held at Dergaon Marwary Dharamsala from January 27-29 under the aegis of Suratram Khadaria Memorial Trust. In the final played last evening, the pair of Javed and Dhrubajyoti Kalita defeated Achinta Saikia and Priyanuj Dowerah of Jorhat 21-12, 21-9.

On the other hand in the above 35 years men�s open doubles category Achinta Saikia and Rajkumar Dowerah of Jorhat clinched the championship title defeating Atrijit Bora and Rupam Mahanta of Jorhat by 21-18, 21-19. In the U-11 boy's singles category Krishanu Kaushik Dutta of Golaghat clinched the championship title defeating Tonmoy Buragohain of Sivasagar 12-21, 21-19 and 21-19 games while in the girl's category Nikita Phukan of Jorhat clinched the title by defeating Shibangi Baishya of Golaghat by 21-10, 17-21 and 21-17. In U-14 boys singles category Antariksha Gogoi of Golaghat won the title defeating Ronaljit Baruah of Jorhat by 17-21, 21-18 and 21-19. In the final of Dergaon based open category Ripunjoy Borthakur and Kankan Sarmah clinched the title by defeating Madan Borthakur and Safiqul Rahman by 24-22, 20-22 and 21-10 games.

According to the secretary of the organising committee Arun Sarmah, a total of 103 players from Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Sonari, Jorhat, Titabar, Numaligarh and Dergaon including the 77 teams participated in the competition. In the prize distribution ceremony held with Atul Goswami in the chair. Pabitra Borthakur, vice-president of All Assam Badminton Association took part as the chief guest. Through his speech he opined that such competition will obviously help the new generation. He also urged the organisers to extend the competition to a State ranking one from the next year. In the ceremony a total of twenty four thousand five hundred cash money were given away to the winners where the trustees of the trust Jay Prakash Khadaria, Pradip Khadaria and Ravi Khadaria were among present. Talking to this correspondent the secretary of the organising committee as well as a noted player Arun Sarmah opined that due to the lack of an Indoor Stadium and scarcity of players hits in organising the State event where in this case the temporary Indoor Stadium with tent has to be made. But the thinking of organising a state level competition is going on, he added.
