GUWAHATI, Dec 18 � Eminent writer and journalist Jatindra Bargohain passed away at the Hayat Hospital around 2.50 this afternoon.
He was 63 and had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since December 16.
Hospital sources said that Bargohain was admitted in a serious condition following a brain stroke, which turned out to be fatal.
Following Bargohain�s death, his fans and well-wishers, including those from the State�s literary, educational and cultural spheres, assembled at the hospital to pay their last respects to the departed soul.
His cremation will take place at Jakhalabandha tomorrow.
Born to Sashikanta and Sabitri Bargohain of Jakhalabandha in Nagaon district on September 8, 1950, Bargohain, after his Matriculation from the local government high school, graduated in Economics from Cotton College with first class in 1969. A brilliant student throughout his student career, he topped Gauhati University in the MA final examination in 1971.
He tied the knot with noted writer Harapriya Barukial Bargohain in 1976.
Bargohain joined the JB College as assistant professor in 1976 and left the job in 1990 to join Dainik Janambhumi as Editor. After a year he went back to JB College and again joined another daily, Natun Dainik as Editor after a few years.
Bargohain was the Editor-in-Chief of Prag News at the time of his death. He had served in several other newspapers and journals as Editor prior to his joining Prag News.
Bargohain was also a recipient of Sahitya Akademi award.
He left behind his wife, two daughters and two sons.
Various organisations and individuals have condoled Bargohain�s death, terming it as a great loss for the State.
The Asam Sahitya Sabha, All Assam Students� Union, Asam Gana Parishad, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Communist Party of India, All India United Democratic Front, Journalists� Federation of Assam, mourned Bargohain�s death and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family members.
