Japanese encephalitis claims 4 in Nalbari

NALBARI, July 22 - Japanese encephalitis, the spread of which has assumed alarming proportions in Nalbari district, has so far claimed four lives, while 14 more people are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

The aforementioned people who died of Japanese encephalitis are Fajal Uddin Ahmed (55) of Guwakuchi, Asad Ali (72) of Chata, Safir Ali (70) of Barkhala and Naba Hazarika (38) of Churchuri village.

The Joint Director of Health Services, Dr Chittaranjan Pathak said that the State Health Department has so far carried out blood tests of more than 42,0000 people and 16 were found to be positive cases.

However, unofficial sources claimed that Japanese encephalitis had in fact infected more people in the district. The Joint Director of Health Services further added that the department arranged fogging in 20 villages of the district and sprayed DDT in 2,806 households so far.
