Jalkiapara church marks golden jubilee

DIBRUGARH, Jan 15 - The Catholic community of Serseriajan, Jalkiapara near Duliajan town, one of the oldest Christian communities of Upper Assam marked the golden jubilee of their Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Sunday.

The church was built in 1964 by Late Fr Paul Taverna and was blessed by Late Bishop Orestes Marengo, the first Bishop of Dibrugarh Diocese. The jubilee celebration was attended by several hundreds Christians. Bishop Joseph Aind, the chief priest for the occasion presided over the Holy Eucharist (prayer service) along with around 15 priests. Nuns from various orders also took part in the celebration. In keeping with the jubilee, a newly-built Grotto of Mother Mary and a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on top of the Church was also blessed by Bishop Aind.

The proceedings of the jubilee were anchored by Fr Kamil Horo, the Rector of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dibrugarh. Fr Horo hails from the village Serseriajan, Jalkiapara. The felicitation and cultural programme which were conducted by Robert Surin, a local Catechist was also attended by local MLA Teres Goala, social workers Tultul Hussain, Paresh Goswami and others.
