Jaitley for independent ombudsman

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 6 Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday emphasized the need for an independent ombudsman in the country to deal with corruption cases, and insisted that the government come up with the relevant proposals in this regard.

Addressing media persons in the capital city, Jaitley who is visiting the State to campaign again for the second phase of the Assembly polls, said that the UPA government should not consider the movements against corruption and the individuals who are part of this movement as its 'adversary', but ponder on the message that is behind this popular upsurge.

Further criticizing the UPA government, Jaitley asserted that during the reign of the UPA, the norms of accountability have substantially weakened which has made the common people feel that the UPA government lacks responsibility and accountability.

"The Congress leadership is indifferent to the issue of corruption which has created agitation in the mind of the public," Jaitley said mentioning that the case of noted social activist Anna Hazare who is on fast unto death should not be viewed as an isolated instance, but rather as reflective of the agitative mood prevailing in the country against corruption.

"If there is delay in addressing corruption, people will become more agitated and the government should realize this," warned Jaitley.

On the other hand, referring to the first phase of the polls in Assam, Jaitley said that the feedback coming to him was positive and that he was confident there would be a change of government in Assam. "We are also optimistic that the BJP will gain significantly in legislative strength," he said adding that now the party was concentrating on the second phase of the Assembly election scheduled on April 11. "The defeat of the Congress in Assam will have a great impact in the entire country," said Jaitley.

Tomorrow Jaitley, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Varun Gandhi will campaign for the party.
