Jairam assures funds for development of Kaziranga

GOLAGHAT, April 16 � Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Forest and Environment during his trip to Kaziranga National Park recently suggested to the authorities concerned to adopt schemes for protection and development of world heritage site Kaziranga, famous for its one-horned rhinos.

Expressing his concern over non-development of the economic condition of the employees of the KNP, Ramesh suggested to spend money collected from tourists for the uplift of the KNP. He also suggested trying to elicit co-operation from the neighbouring people of the KNP.

He further stressed the need of preparing schemes of development for the people of the neighbouring areas who are basically rural people.

Jairam told media persons that the Central government had spent an amount of Rs 3 crore for the protection and preservation of the flora and fauna of the KNP under the Tiger Project. He assured to release more funds to the Tiger Project.

The Assam Forest Employees� Association under the leadership of PK Das, organising secretary of the Kaziranga sakha, Rupak Bhuyan, secretary and Tarun Rajkhowa, adviser felicitated Jairam Ramesh and submitted a memorandum through which they demanded him to give free education and health care for children of the forest employees, initiate appointment process of sons and daughters of the retired forest employees and sanction travelling allowances to the employees of the forest department.

Aid for challenged: Tricycles and wheelchairs were formally distributed among challenged people on April 8 at the Furkating Biren Bora Memorial Handicapped School by Horendra Nath Bora, deputy commissioner, Golaghat.

Bora said the Government of Assam had implemented several ambitious schemes for the uplift of the challenged people. A total 39 beneficiaries were given tricycles and wheelchairs.

A meeting on the occasion was held under the presidentship of Suren Dutta, president HC and was addressed by Apurba Kumar Barua, a senior journalist, PK Dutta, DIPRO Pramila Kandali, welfare officer, Sampriti Gogoi, and Budhin Bordoloi.

Memorial meet: A �smriti charan� sabha was held at Jelmoni in Golaghat district on April 5 on the death anniversary of Hem Prakash Narayan, who was former Education Minister of the Cong (I) government and was an MLA of Dergaon constituency.

The meeting was addressed by Thaneswar Malakar, a writer and CEO, Sri Nilapadma Phukan, former principal DKD College, Dergaon, Romananda Das, Atul Goswami, Krishna Das, A Borthakur. The speakers underlined the manifold achievements of late Hem Prakash Narayan in the field of political and social life.

A souvenir Shradhargo was released by Hori Prasad Bordoloi ex-ADC and writer.

Earlier, Munin Bora explained the objective of the meeting.
