Jain takes charge as Meghalaya DGP

SHILLONG, June 30 - Senior police official, SK Jain today took temporary charge as the Director General of Police after Rajiv Mehta�s tenure ended.

Jain, a 1984 batch IPS officer, would continue to hold the charge of Special Branch and Criminal Investigation Department as the Special DGP, apart from the additional responsibility he was handed today, a notification said.

Earlier, the State Government tried to extend the service of Mehta for three months. However, as reported, the request to extend the service was rejected by the Union Government.

Meanwhile, the State Security Commission has not empanelled any IPS officer so far to be considered for the post of the police chief. �Nobody has been empanelled so far,� a senior police official said.

Senior most officials list from Assam-Meghalaya cadre are YC Modi, of 1984 batch, followed by PS Purohit, of 1985. Both are on Central Government deputation. The other senior official is Raghvendra Awasthi, DGP (Civil Defence and Home Guards).

Over the years, appointment of DGP has always been mired in controversy in the State.
