GUWAHATI, Dec 3 - The birth centenary of Jadav Narayan Das, an educationist who fought for the protection of the Assamese language in western Assam, was celebrated by the Asam Sahitya Sabha recently at its head office here, stated a press release issued today.
People from several towns of western Assam � including Dhubri, Golokganj, Agomoni, Bilasipara, Chapar etc., remembered his struggle and contribution to Assamese language.
Tributes were offered by several noted speakers at the meeting. Das was remembered as the pioneer who initiated the idea of Grantha Mela (book fair) in Assam in 1970. He was remembered as a professor, principal, actor, social worker who tried to create unity among all sections of people.
Das played a great role during the visit of the State Reorganisation Commission. As president of the Ganasangram Parishad of undivided Dhubri district in the 1980s, he was arrested several times during the in Assam movement.
Dr Upendrajit Sharma, president of the Dhubri District Sahitya Sabha; Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha; Prof Upen Sharma, retired professor of Cotton University, Giripada Choudhury, proprietor of Bani Prakash, Dr Ahizuddin Sekh, former principal of BN College, Dhubri; Hemalata Kakati, retired principal of Chilarai College, Golakganj; Azad Ali Ahmed, secretary of the Dhubri District Sahitya Sabha, Biswajit Kalita, chairman of the Dhubri Town Committee, and several other dignitaries spoke about Das's contributions.
