JAC strike hits life in Manipur

IMPHAL, Sept 2 - Normal life in Manipur particularly in Imphal town was affected on Monday due to the 48-hour general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed in connection with the death of a school girl.

The strike that began from 6 am on Monday was called by the JAC demanding justice for the girl student who was found dead at her school hostel in Imphal West district on July 18. The JAC wants the government to hand over the case to the CBI. It is also demanding immediate release of the arrested JAC leaders.

Though there was no report of any untoward incident, markets and commercial establishments, banks, educational institutions were closed during the day. Attendance in government offices in Imphal was very thin.

Inter-state and inter-district besides other city-based public transport services also remained off the roads during the day. But the Imphal airport continued its operations as usual.

Armed policemen were deployed across Imphal after prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were imposed.
