IT raids likely on business houses

GUWAHATI, Oct 3 � The Income Tax (IT) Department would soon crack down on a number of business establishments situated in and around the city on charges of �tax evasion� and for possession of unaccountable assets.

A list of such establishments, which allegedly have deprived the country�s exchequer of revenue worth several crores of rupees, has already been prepared by the department.

Sources in the IT department at Guwahati told this reporter that several teams of IT sleuths have already been engaged to prepare the blue-print for the operation that would be carried out in a phased manner.

Asked, the IT department, however, refused to disclose the names of the establishments. �We are keeping a close eye on the activities of these groups and the noose would soon be tightened on them,� the sources pointed out.

It needs mention here that the IT department recently conducted a series of raids and searches in premises owned by Brahmputra Construction, a reputed real estate developers group.

The raid conducted is seen as one of the biggest anti-tax evasion drives conducted by the IT department in the State in the recent past.

An official of the department went on to say that the department has laid hands on some concrete clues hinting on massive tax evasion indulged by reputed business groups across the State.

On the developments relating to Brahmaputra Constructions, the IT sources informed the papers are being examined and even though some developments have taken place, those cannot be shared at this moment.
