Issues of public interest discussed

GUWAHATI, Nov 22 � The AREIDA Summit organised by Assam Real Estate and Infrastructure Developers� Association in association with the Guwahati Development Department at Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok today featured a seminar where experts deliberated on various issues of public interest.

The issues ranged from flash floods, water-logging and scarcity of potable water to traffic management in Guwahati and mitigation of the power shortage, to impact of big dams. On the raging issue of big dams with special reference to the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project, SN Phukan, former CMD of NEEPCO said that power projects involving big dams were extremely important for a power-starved State like Assam, but the exercise needed to be guided by expert supervision.

APGCL engineer Prodyut Bujarboruah also participated in the seminar.

Dr C Mallikarjun from IIT Guwahati spoke on traffic management in Guwahati, while Dr Arup Sharma, also from IIT Guwahati, gave his suggestions on the mitigation of flash floods and water-logging in Guwahati. Related issues such as provisioning for potable water in Guwahati, urban sanitation and integrated development of the city were also discussed.

The AREIDA summit will conclude on November 24.
