Israeli team to boost Meghalaya agri sector

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Dec 10 (PTI): A team of experts from Israel is in Meghalaya to recommend value addition to farming which could be taken up by the youth.

"We have to reverse the thinking, as farming can be an attractive option for sustainable employment," Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who met the delegation of Indo-Israel Chamber of Commerce (IICC) last night, said. "The intention is to make agriculture attractive for the youth," he said.

Sangma said the Israeli team will be working on strategies, giving emphasis to high value crops which could be adopted using advanced technology.

The team will submit its report in January after which the State government will take a call on the matter.

IICC chairman Raviv Byron said "the people are willing to make changes. Agriculture can be sustainable. Value addition is necessary for improving the sector."

He complimented Northeast farmers for increasingly adopting organic methods of cultivation, instead of chemicals as in the rest of India which was contaminating the soil.

"The state can adopt more advanced methods. We will share our experience of 60 years," he said.
