Irregularities in MGNREGA schemes alleged

By Correspondent

BARPETA, June 1 The people of Mechpara under Uttar Howli gaon panchayat alleged low quality of work and misuse of funds sanctioned towards two schemes under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

They informed that a scheme of agri bund cum a culvert was sanctioned in this village at an estimated cost of Rs 35.24 lakh in 2013-14. Work on this scheme began in the last part of December 2013. But it is a matter of regret that the scheme has not been completed.

Further, they alleged that the bund is built with sand which has begun eroding during the rainy season. The culvert is also constructed with substandard materials and the norm for construction of such type of culvert is not followed. As a result it has developed cracks and is leaning day by day with proper indication that it will collapse during the flood.

Another allegation levelled by the people is that a road from the rail line to the village was built at an estimated amount of Rs 20 lakh. But only ten per cent of money was actually spent in the construction work.

They alleged that the president of the gaon panchayat and the local member of the zila parishad in connivance with the officers concerned have misused the sanctioned money meant for these two schemes. They have requested the Deputy Commissioner and the Panchayat and Rural Development department to enquire into the matter and punish the guilty at the earliest.
