TEZPUR, April 30 - Irate people protesting the alleged failure of medical staff in providing emergency services to some accident victims vandalised Tezpur Medical College Hospital (TMCH) here on Friday. The irate people also blocked the NH-15 for a few hours creating an awkward situation in the Tumuki area.
According to information available, one Mantu Nath of Puthimari area and 12 other people were on their way to Tezpur Mission Chariali weekly market by a pick-up van (AS-12-E-2230) from their village in the morning and their vegetable-laden vehicle losing control skidded off the NH-15 near Rangamati-Bakultol area at around 5:30 am, leading to serious injuries to all the 13 people who were rushed to the TMCH.
Relatives and other attendants of the injured alleged that though doctors should have been present at that moment, nobody was seen providing emergency treatment to these accident victims. The doctors arrived at the hospital only at around 8:30 am and as timely treatment was not provided, Mantu Nath succumbed to his injuries, they alleged.
After an accident victim died, sensing an unwarranted situation, the doctors fled from the spot leaving the other injured persons unattended. When the relatives and other people came to know about it, they got infuriated and started vandalising the hospital.
The situation was brought under control after deployment of police and paramilitary personnel in the area and the magistrate on duty assured the agitating people of addressing all the grievances. Police later arrested Bhaikan Nath, Jitu Haque and Ghana Kanta Nath on charges of leading the act of vandalism.
