Irate mob sets police watch post ablaze

SILCHAR, Feb 16 - In a sensational incident, an irate mob set a police watch post comprising four buildings at Nivia in Karimganj district alleging misbehaviour by police at an ongoing local festival of worshipping boats.

According to sources, the incident took place at around 11 pm on Friday when the festival and a fair was being held at Maguraghat village under Ratabari police station. Sources added to inform that the police team had rushed to the place and demanded money from the shopkeepers therein. The situation took a turn for the worse when the police persons had chased the people and even fired bullets targetting them, the locals alleged. A 22-year-old youth was left with grave injuries and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Karimganj DC Phani Bhushan Roy, DIG (Southern Range) Prasanta Kumaar Dutta and SP Manabendra Dev Roy rushed to the spot with large team of policemen to control the situation.

According to police, while the case is being probed, the officer-in-charge of the watch post has been suspended and three persons have been detained in connection with the incident.
