AGARTALA, Aug 20 - Although traffic is normal on Assam-Agartala National Highway and also on alternative NEC Highway, the IOC has decided to bring fuel through Bangladesh, official sources confirmed here today.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been inked between IOC and Road and Highways department, Bangladesh.
The IOC finds it prudent to bring fuel through Bangladesh territory since the journey is less than that of the Assam-Agartala National Highway.
While the distance between Agartala and Guwahati stands at 300 km, it takes only 136 km journey to bring fuel to the State if Bangladesh territory is used. In that case, the cost of transportation of fuel will be less, according to sources.
According to reports, the alternative route through Bangladesh will start from Dawki/Tamabil to Manughat (Kailashahar) via Rajnagar, Moulavi Bazar, Shyamshernagar and Chaklapur LCS (Bangladesh).
However, it is not yet clear when the consignment will start journey for the State by using Bangladesh soil.
Meanwhile, the second consignment of RoRo carrying 28 tankers of fuel arrived at Churaibari railway station on Friday giving a major boost to the States fuel stock, said District Magistrate North district Dr Sandeep Mahatme.
All the fuel tankers were dispatched to Dharmanagar for necessary testing before leaving for Agartala, he said over telephone from Dharmanagar.
It is expected that all the fuel tankers will reach Agartala by next 48 hours, he said. Fuel induction through RoRo has appeared as a major boost to the States fuel stock over the next two weeks and the credit goes to Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) as well as the Railways. Executive Director of IOC Dipankar Roy had taken a lead role in bringing fuel by using RoRo service.
Even if the alternative highway is okay for transportation, the State will have to maintain it till September 15. Thereafter, the road will go to PWD, Assam, the DM said. However, repairing work on the Assam-Agartala National Highway is tardy and nobody knows by when the ongoing work will be completed.
With major induction of fuel, the government today withdrew rationing system on petrol and diesel in the wake of severe fuel crisis, official sources said here today.
