Investors summit: 12 focus areas identified

GUWAHATI, Jan 27 - Around 4,800 people have registered for participation in the Global Investors Summit slated for February 3 and 4, with some key industry captains like Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani, Dilip Shanghvi, Anand Burman, Dr Subhash Chandra, Amar Abrol, Sushil Goenka and Sanjiv Puri confirming their participation in the event billed as the largest ever investment promotion and facilitation initiative by the Government of Assam.

Around 4,000 registrations were from outside the State, Industry & Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told a press conference here today, adding that the registrations have been closed considering the capacity of the venue.

The government has identified 12 focus sectors for the summit � agriculture & food processing including organic cultivation & bamboo, handloom, textile & handicrafts, logistics, river transport & port township, IT & ITeS, pharmaceutical & medical equipment, plastics & petrochemicals, power, tourism, hospitality & wellness, civil aviation, petroleum & natural gas, and startups & innovation.

There will be an exhibition hanger where 25 stalls will be put up. The exhibition will have two hangers each displaying the core strengths of Assam to potential investors. In total it will comprise 25 different thematic pavilions spread across an area 4,400 square metres.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event on February 3. Several Union ministers, including Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Smriti Zubin Irani, Dharmendra Pradhan, Jitendra Singh and Kiren Rijiju are expected to take part in the proceedings.

The budget for the event is around Rs 32 crore, of which the Central government will bear Rs 10 crore, Patowary said in response to a question.

The Assam government has invited business delegations and ministers from as many as 20 countries in the ASEAN and the Southeast Asian region. Bangladesh (led by Minister of Industries), Bhutan (led by Prime Minister of Bhutan), Cambodia (led by Minister of Tourism), Lao PDR (led by Minister of Culture and Tourism), Myanmar (led by Minister of Commerce) are expected to join the meet.

In addition, the Czech Republic, Germany, Japan and Nepal are to be represented by their respective Ambassadors to India. Moreover, Vietnam is going to be represented by a business delegation as well as eminent specialist speakers for the startup business session. Business delegations from other countries like the United States of America, UAE and Israel are also expected in the Global Investors Summit.
