Investigating officer dies in accident

GUWAHATI, March 6 - Investigating officer of the multi-crore rupees Agriculture department scam Sadananda Hazarika died last night after the car he was driving met with an accident near Basistha area under mysterious circumstances.

Hazarika was declared dead after being brought to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Hazarika, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with the Assam Police�s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was probing the multi-crore rupees scam in which five senior officials of the Agriculture department were recently arrested for alleged misappropriation in the supply of power tillers and other items.

Although the probe into the case was on for the last couple of months, the investigation gained momentum recently with the arrests.

Hazarika (58) , known for his questioning skills and fool-proof investigation methodology, was also the man responsible for probing a number of other scams and cases of importance during his stint as a police officer. He was a resident of Games Village.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of CID Ranauk Ali Hazarika told this reporter that although prima facie it appears to be a case of accident, all kinds of apprehensions including that of the family members and others would be looked into.

�I on behalf of the entire police department express our heartfelt condolences to the family members on his untimely death,� Hazarika said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the death of Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police Sadananda Hazarika who died in a road accident in the evening of March 5. He ordered an inquiry into the incident leading to the death of the DSP of Criminal Investigation Department and asked DGP Mukesh Sahay for an inquiry and submit report at the earliest.
