Internet gateway in Tripura by mid-January

By Prabir Sil

AGARTALA, Dec 27 - The BSNL in Tripura would be able to receive Internet bandwidth from Bangladeshi Submarine Cable Corporation Ltd (BSCCL) by middle of next month. As per the agreement, the BSCCL would provide 10 GB bandwidth to BSNL to boost the Internet service in the entire Northeastern region.

According to BSNL sources, all necessary works to make Tripura an international gateway of Internet service have been almost completed. Even laying of Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) connecting Bangladeshs Cox Bazars submarine cable junction has been completed without any major trouble.

All necessary equipments core rider, internet gateway rider and PE riders were already taken to the State to implement the ambitious plan. An engineer from Dimapur has already arrived here to undertake necessary tests before using Bangladesh submarine cable, said a senior BSNL officer here on Sunday.

To prepare ground work for inauguration of the ambitious project, General Manager (GM), Tripura BSNL SSA J Jayakumar had a meeting with senior officials to review the progress of the project.

There are indications Prime Minister Nanrendra Modi may visit the State to inaugurate the internet gateway project in middle of next month. And his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina also make a short visit to witness the historic event, said the official.

Once the Cox Bazars submarine cable is available, then the Internet service in the entire Northeastern region will get a major boost, he said.

Currently, the Internet service in the region is not upto the mark due to long distance from the international Internet gateway. As of now, the county has only two Internet gateways Mumbai and Chennai and Agartala will be the third such gateway.

Union Minister for Communication Ravi Shankar Prasad laid the foundation stone for the ambitious project here on July 11 in presence of Governor Tathagata Roy and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
