International Yoga Day celebrated

GUWAHATI/JALUKBARI, June 22 - The International Day of Yoga was celebrated by the Gauhati University in association with Vivekananda Kendra, Assam Prant, Guwahati, on Tuesday at the GU campus. A number of GU NSS volunteers, faculty members, officers and employees took part in the programme.

The programme included demonstration of yoga by practitioners, exhibition on yogic postures, documentary films on yoga, lecture on yoga and distribution of information, education and communication to all the participants.

The welcome address was given by the Director, Students� Welfare, GU, and convener of the programme, Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati, who also stated the objectives of the programme.

The programme was inaugurated by GU Registrar Dr SK Nath. The chief guest of the programme was Chinmoy Choudhury, senior advocate and VKIC member.

At Ashadeep Rehab Centre: The International Yoga Day was celebrated on Tuesday at Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre here, where special students of Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre and regular students from nine different educational institutions namely, Handique Girls� College; Tezpur University; Tata Institute of Social Science, Guwahati; Amity University, New Delhi; Miranda House, New Delhi; Indraprastha College, New Delhi; Pragiyotish College, Guwahati; NERIM Guwahati and Sikkim Manipal University, took part. The yoga sessions were conducted by yoga experts Manas Kalita and Alice Banting.

Along with the event, a youth activation programme of Special Olympics was also conducted where 57 students of the above institutions were trained to become youth leaders to spread awareness, love and support among children and adults with intellectual disabilities and associated disorders.

India Tourism: The International Yoga Day was celebrated by India Tourism, Guwahati, at the campus of Faculty School, Geetanagar, on Tuesday.

The programme was organised and conducted by Amarjyoti Goswami on behalf of India Tourism, Guwahati. Sashanka Deka, counsellor, and Sagarika Goswami, actress, were the chief guests at the function. Nilotpal Bordoloi, principal, Faculty School, addressed the gathering on the occasion.

The students of the school exhibited various forms of yoga. Swapna Gogoi and Mira Das of India Tourism were also present on the occasion. The Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education also celebrated the International Yoga Day on Tuesday.
