International Workers� Day observed

MANGALDAI, May 1 - The 131st edition of the International Workers� Day was observed on Sunday here by Sadou Mangaldai Nirman Shramik Santha (SMNSS).

A daylong programme was organised at the playground of Mangaldai Vidyapith to mark the occasion.

The programme began with the hoisting of the organisational flag by Saiyedur Rahman, president of SMNSS, followed by smriti tarpan offered jointly by prominent social worker Ramesh Ghosh and secretary of the organising body Atul Kalita.

Later, a plantation programme was initiated jointly by Munmuni Dutta, Head Mistress of Mangaldai Vidyapith and young entrepreneur Sekhar Mazumdar. A cultural rally with the participation of around 1,000 people from the workers community and other local citizens was taken out on the occasion. Social activist Ashok Bhragab flagged off the rally.

In an open session held in the afternoon, a host of distinguished guests, including senior advocate of the Gauhati High Court Nekibur Zaman, academician Bisitra Kr Medhi, senior journalist Pranab Gogoi and advocate Baharul Islam, spoke on the significance of the day and urged the workers to remain united.

The celebration ended with a cultural evening which was inaugurated by popular comedian Premananda Barua.

On the other hand, Mangaldai Ancholik Nirman Shramik Union under the aegis of the CITU�s State unit observed the day on its office premises at Krishna Nagar, Dakhsin Mangaldai. A seminar was held under the chairmanship of the president of Mangaldai chapter of BSNL Employees� Union on the occasion. Dr Rama Bora, a writer, was the appointed speaker in the meeting.

Similarly, Darrang District Public Transport Workers� Union observed the day in Bhebarghat public bus station campus with a daylong programme, including community cleanliness drive, hoisting of the union�s flag, public meeting etc.

The meeting was presided over by Bhupen Barua. Social worker Gurujyoti Das and president of Darrang bus owners� association Munin Dutta also addressed the gathering.

At Tinsukia: The 131st International Workers� Day was jointly observed by several organisations of workers community affiliated to the All India Central Council of Trade Union (AICCTU) and Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) of Tinsukia district at Durgabari Hall here on Sunday.

The programme started with the hoisting of flag by Nimai Dutta, a retired worker of Katchujan TE. A rally was also taken out to mark the occasion.

An open meeting, held on the occasion, was presided over by Subhrajyoti Bardhan and addressed by several trade union leaders, including Subhas Sen.

At Namrup: The May Day was observed on Sunday by the workers� unions of three industrial houses located here with zeal and enthusiasm.

At BVFCL here, the three workers� unions � Namrup Fertilizer Shramik Union (NFSU), Fertilizer Workers� Union (FWUN) and Contractors� Labours Union � observed the day centrally in front of BVFCL main gate.

On the occasion, the flag was hoisted by Arun Phukan, president of the FWUN, while Tileswar Bora, general sectary of NFSU, dwelt at length on the importance of the May Day celebration.

At Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) here, the programme started with the hoisting of flag by Monuj Bora, president the APWU. At the NTPS, the day was observed by the workers� union with befitting manner.
