International Labour Day observed

GUWAHATI, May 1 � International Labour Day, also known as May Day, was observed in the State today, along with the rest of India and other parts of the world.

In Guwahati, six national trade unions, along with a number of other unions representing various industries, jointly held a programme.

Over 3,000 workers participated in it. A rally was taken out from Dighalipukhuripaar to Panbazar.

The six unions which jointly held the event were the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), United Trade Union Congress (UTUC) and Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS).

The event was addressed by Deben Bhattacharya of CITU, Chakreswar Kalita of AITUC, Pankaj Das of AICCTU, Azizur Rahman of AIUTUC, Dinesh Nath of UTUC and Ajay Dutta of HMS.

Members of bank employees unions, Life Insurance Corporation of India and Assam Tribune Employees� Union, besides others also took part in the event.

The Northeast Frontier Railway Mazdoor Union also marked May Day at Maligaon. A rally was taken out by the Northeast Frontier Railway employees, which was followed by a largely-attended meeting.

Veteran trade unionist Samindra Hujuri addressed the gathering.

The Durniti Birodhi Manab Adhikar Suraksha Mancha observed May Day with a day-long programme at its Six Mile office.

May Day was also observed at other places around the city as well as in other places of Assam.
