International Day of PwDs observed in NE

ITANAGAR, Dec 3 - Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) on Monday exhorted the physically disabled persons to never lose heart but use their abilities to progress.

Attending the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) at Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired (DPMSHVI) at Chimpu here, the Governor exhorted the PwDs to take in their limitation and develop their personality.

Referring to the �Rights of PwDs Bill-2016� passed by Parliament, he suggested that new schemes, amenities and reservations for the differently abled people must be regularly brought in.

The Governor felicitated the differently abled persons on the occasion and also gave away prizes to winners of the essay writing competition conducted by the State Department of Social Justice, Empowerment and Tribal Affairs. He also felicitated Dr K Zaman, medical practitioner of Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar for his contribution towards DPMSHVI, Chimpu since its inception.

Complimenting Apang for his contribution in establishing DPMSHIV, the Governor called upon people to change their attitude towards differently abled people. Instead of being sympathetic, they must be empathetic towards them, he added.

Meanwhile, the Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority today organised a one-day legal awareness programme for differently abled persons on the occasion.

Imphal Correspondent adds: The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), 2018 was observed in Manipur on Monday.

The State level function was held under the theme �Empowering persons with disabilities (PwDs) and ensuring inclusiveness and equality� at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex here.

Speaking on the occasion, State Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen said that the Department, as a nodal department, has been implementing various schemes and welfare programmes for differently-abled persons to support them to secure education, academics and skill development and enable them to earn a living and be economically independent.

In another observation at Khuthabi Ground in Andro constituency, Forest Minister Th Shyamkumar distributed blankets to 180 differently abled persons.

Staff Correspondent adds from Shillong:Meghalaya today celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and officials said, �discrimination towards PwDs is a crime.�

Additional Chief Secretary, H Marwein during the celebrations said: �We need to break down barriers to ensure that rights of PwDs are not violated. Discrimination towards PwDs is a crime.�

Marwein informed that the government has drawn various initiatives and policies to ensure access of PwDs to public properties and for creating job opportunities in government organisations. He said the government has created a unique identity card for PwDs so that they can draw benefits from different government schemes and grants.

Chief Electoral Officer, FR Kharkongor said that the Central Government has made this year a �Year of Accessible Election� and it is the endeavour of the Election Department to ensure PwDs get their right to vote.

Kharkongor said one initiative of the Election department is the development of election materials in Braille for the benefit of PwDs.
