SHILLONG, Oct 2 - The International Day of Older Persons was observed in Meghalaya on Thursday with the theme Sustainability and age inclusiveness in the urban environment.
A programme in this regard was held at Mawkdok, about 25 kms from here in which local MLA from Sohra, T Chyne was the chief guest. The programme was organised by District Social Welfare Officer, Shillong.
Expressing concern at the plight of the old and the aged who are often abandoned or left unattended by their children, Chyne reminded that it was the duty of the children to respect and take responsibilities for making sure our parents are taken care of.
More than 100 senior citizens benefited from the free medical health check-up camp conducted on the occasion. Three of the eldest citizens of Laitkroh Hian Nongsteng aged 103 years, Khmew Khongsit, 98 years and Berisil Nongrum, 100 years were honoured and presented with gift hampers.
