BARPETA, July 21 - At a time when more than 15 lakh people are being severely affected by the devastating floods and about 11 lakh people are still languishing in relief camps in Barpeta district, inmates of the Bhakatpara relief camp of the town reportedly got contaminated black coloured water mixed with mud from one of the tube wells installed there by the PHE department.

On suspicion, three conscious camp inmates immediately brought the matter to the notice of the Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Munindra Sarma on July 19. The Deputy Commissioner ordered an inquiry into the same with a time limit of 16 hours for submitting the report.

Barpeta Zila Parishads chief executive officer Pranab Kumar was entrusted with the inquiry. He visited the site yesterday and exhumed the tube well with the help of excavators and found no long pipe attached to it. He submitted his report to the Deputy Commissioner on time, but the findings of the report are yet to be made public.

When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner informed that the inquiry had been ordered as per the directives of the Chief Minister and the report has been sent to the office of the Chief Minister. He informed that the Chief Minister will make the report public once he returns from Delhi.

Sarma also informed that the Chief Minister has been constantly monitoring the flood situation in the district and is well aware of the development.
