INPT to support Congress in LS polls

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, March 24 - The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) will support the Congress in the elections to the States two Parliamentary constituencies West Tripura and East Tripura.

The INPT has decided to support Congress candidates, based on an MoU signed with Congress president Rahul Gandhi, said party president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl at a joint press conference here on Sunday.

The MoU was signed between the Congress president and the INPT president on four-point socio-political issues, in Delhi on April 11. Inclusion of Kokborok language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, introduction of Roman script in Kokborok, scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and direct funding to Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were part of the MoU.

Hrangkhawl said the party will withdraw its candidates from both the Lok Sabha constituencies to ensure a direct fight between the Congress and the ruling BJP.

PCC president Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, who was working to consolidate anti-BJP votes in the hilly areas, was upbeat over the development.

I am happy that the INPT has decided to support Congress candidates in both the constituencies for the larger interest of the State. With INPTs support, the Congress will be able to give a decisive fight to the BJP in the elections, he said.

For the Congress, Subal Bhowmik would fight from West Tripura constituency, and Pragya Debbarman, daughter of Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, would be contesting from East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency.
