INPT to seek NRC in Tripura

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Aug 5 - Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) would press for carrying out National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Tripura, a vulnerable bordering State of the country adjoining Bangladesh.

The INPT State committee in its meeting has decided to approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to carry out NRC in Tripura to identify bodafide Indian citizens, said partys general secretary Jagadish Debbarma here on Sunday.

The demographic picture of the State has totally changed due to influx from across the border and Tripura cant bear the extra burden of infiltrators any more, he said.

We will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister demanding for NRC in Tripura which had witnessed large scale infiltration from across the border, he said.

Debbarma added, the party is worried as illegal infiltration has been still going on and the government has failed to arrest the growing menace.

However, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had ruled out having NRC in Tripura as there is no such problem here. There is no need to undertake NRC in Tripura as the citizens have valid document unlike other States, he told the media at Nagpur.

Former Minister and CPI (M) central committee member Badal Chowdhury also opposed carrying out NRC in Tripura. It is not fair to identify those people who have been residing in the State for the last 30/40 years. It could have been earlier, he said.

PCC vice president Tapas Deb termed the NRC demand as politically motivated. Publication of draft NRC in Assam is a political stunt by the BJP-led Government. It will create tension in the entire Northeastern region, he said.
