Infrastructure deficit hindering NE progress

SHILLONG, April 23 � The National Advisory Council today said infrastructure deficit and dependency syndrome was �major challenges� in the face of ensuring peace and development in the entire North eastern region, reports PTI.

�Infrastructure is a major deficit in the region which hampers a pro-investment climate while the syndrome of dependency is a major challenge,� Prof Pramod Tandon, Convener of the working group of the NAC said.

Tandon was addressing the two-day consultation meeting of the working group of the National Advisory Council (NAC) on development of North eastern region at the North Eastern Council secretariat here today.

�The NE region has special challenges which need new and innovative solutions,� Tandon said.

The NAC members were unanimous in agreeing that the region has �enormous developmental potential� but its growth have been affected due to slow infrastructure development.

Tandon said, better connectivity and improved access to trade with rest of the country and the Look East Policy which opens window of trade with Bangladesh will yield results.
