NEW DELHI, Oct 22 - The Joint River Commission (JRC) meeting between India and Bangladesh is likely to be held soon. The JRC meeting is crucial given the controversy over sharing of the Teesta river waters, which is being opposed by the West Bengal government.

Briefing newsmen, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesman Anurag Srivastava said new High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswamy has joined recently and as is the practice has been meeting officials of the Bangladesh government. During the meeting bilateral issues of interest are being discussed. The High Commissioner has also met two senior ministers of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Srivastava recalled that India and Bangladesh recently held Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) meeting between the two foreign ministers. The two ministers urged the authorities concerned to hold the ministerial level JRC meeting and both sides are currently holding discussion on this.

Sources indicated that the JRC meeting between the two countries is likely to be held this year ahead of the summit level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
