NEW DELHI, April 18 The land boundary deal with Bangladesh is likely to fall in the Parliament with the BJP today deciding to oppose the constitutional amendment Bill when it is introduced in Parliament.
The BJP would oppose the Bill inside and outside Parliament.
The crucial meeting on the issue, presided over by LK Advani and attended by senior central BJP leaders, finalized the partys stand today. The meet was attended by BJP national president Rajnath Singh, Opposition leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitly, SS Ahluawalia, Ravishankar Prasad, among others.
Assam was represented by State president Sarbanada Sonowal and four other MPs.
The State BJP leaders stressed the need for sealing the porous Indo-Bangla border where rampant cattle smuggling, besides infiltration, had been going on.
It also said that as Bangladesh was not cooperating with India in taking back the legally identified illegal migrants, India should keep pressurizing Bangladesh into accepting the declared migrants. They also called for sealing the border and updating the NRC within a specific timeframe, besides expediting the process of detection and deportation of the illegal migrants.
With todays decision, the uncertainty over the BJPs stand on the controversial land swap deal has ended.
It may be mentioned that Bangladesh government has been exerting pressure on the Indian government to ratify the land transfer agreement.
