GUWAHATI, April 3 One of Indias most infamous vehicle lifters, Anil Chauhan, whose links police said, could possibly be traced to a string of cases related to murder, gun-running and smuggling of animal parts in Assam, has finally been arrested by the Guwahati Police.

Chauhan, who was arrested from Azara in the wee hours today along with one of his accomplices Mamud Choudhury (30), has also cases registered against him in Delhi, Mumbai, Meghalaya and West Bengal, besides some other parts of the country.

Aged about 44 years, the notorious criminal had reportedly amassed moveable and immovable property worth crores of rupees both in Assam and outside.

With an all-India network, Chauhan had eluded police for years and even though he was arrested twice in between by Meghalaya and Delhi Police, he had managed to get out on bail on both the occasions.

It is a major breakthrough not only for us, but for other States also. I have informed our counterparts in Delhi, Mumbai, Shillong and Kolkata about the catch, Commissioner of Police (Guwahati) Mukesh Agarwal, told mediapersons this morning.

He is one of the notorious and influential ring leaders of auto theft network in the country. He has a well-oiled network when it comes to disposal of automobile, Agarwal said, adding that police also recovered a 9mm pistol, a revolver, four cell phones and five SIM cards.

Agarwal said that a thorough verification on his involvement in all kinds of criminal activities is being done as it carries inter-State ramifications.

In the last three months, from January to March, 255 two-wheelers and 89 other vehicles were stolen from Guwahati. During that same period, 120 persons have been arrested from different locations in Guwahati on charges of crime against property.
