NEW DELHI, July 11 - Watching with curiosity China�s growing involvement in the Rohingya crisis, India is currently trying to broker a deal between Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve the refugee crisis.
On July 7, China brokered an informal deal in Beijing between Bangladesh and Myanmar by which the two countries agreed to improve the situation in the crisis-ridden Rakhine state in three phases. These include putting a halt to violence, initiation of the repatriation process as soon as possible and promote local development, said sources familiar with the development.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali met Myanmar�s Union Minister for the State Counsellor�s Office Kyaw Tint Swe in the last week of June. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also held a meeting with both of them.
China has made it known that it wants to play a �constructive� role to resolve the crisis after the 2016 military crackdown in Rakhine state of Myanmar following which over 700,000 Muslim Rohingya fled to Bangladesh.
China, however, vetoed in the UN Security Council to prevent any resolution against Myanmar. China said it has �no personal interest� in the Rohingya episode and was making a �genuine effort� to help Bangladesh and Myanmar solve the problem.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also visited Bangladesh after the Rohingya exodus. On the basis of the Bangladesh-Myanmar agreement, he said, �China will try to promote the negotiation process between Myanmar and Bangladesh to find a common solution to the Rohingya crisis.�
China has said it is willing to provide help and assistance for improvement of situation in the Rakhine state, including humanitarian assistance and also construction of different structures and Myanmar has been conveyed accordingly.
