India drop 22 places to 160th in FIFA rankings

By The Assam Tribune

New Delhi, Sept 15 (IANS): With just four months left for the Asian Cup, there was some bad news for the national football team that dropped 22 places to 160th in the latest FIFA rankings released today.

The 22-place drop is Indias biggest slide since the inception of FIFA rankings in 1992. India also dropped nine spots in the Asian rankings and are now placed 33rd in the continent. Even neighbours, Bangladesh (145) and Sri Lanka (148) are now above India. Pakistan is two spots behind at the 162nd place.

The drop in the rankings can be attributed to Indias consecutive losses against Thailand earlier this month.

Australia and Bahrain, who are also in Indias group in the Asian Cup, have also dropped in the FIFA rankings. Australia dropped four spots to 24 while Bahrain has dropped seven places to 75. But South Korea remains in 44th place.

World Cup finalists Spain and Netherlands retained their places as the top two teams but Brazil dropped to fourth spot while Germany is now third in the rankings.
