India, China pledge peace on border

By Prasanta J Baruah

HANOI (VIETNAM), Oct 29 Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao today agreed to maintain peace and tranquility along the border and carry forward the guiding principles and political parameters of settling the border issue framed in 2005. They also decided to hold a meeting of special representatives of the two countries by the end of November in Beijing to seek solutions to the core issues.

National Security Adviser (NSA) Shiv Shankar Menon, briefing newspersons on the 45 minutes long talks between the two leaders said the talks were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere where both the Prime Ministers discussed the whole gamut of Indo-China relationship. They took a strategic view of the core issues and expressed satisfaction at the development of the relationship.

The NSA said Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh expressed his sensitivities on core issues like the border and the staple visa issue for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to his Chinese counterpart and asked his officials to work out solutions to lead up to Wen Jiabaos visit to India later this year.

On the issue of trade imbalances affecting India, Menon said that the Chinese Prime Minister outlined various steps taken in this connection. Both sides expressed satisfaction at the fact that two-way trade worth $45 billion has already taken place this year and hoped that it would go up to $60 billion by the end of the year. Of the $60 billion two-way trade last year , Indian exports amounted to only $9 billion.

Both sides agreed to work out a solution for the sensitive issue on high level defence exchanges, which came under a cloud after the Chinese refused to grant visa to Lt Gen V S Jaswal, GOC, Northern Command , on the plea that he was commanding a the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Significantly, this was the 10th meeting between the two Prime Ministers in eight years. The Chinese Prime Minister echoed the Indian Prime Ministers view that there was enough space in the world for both India and China to grow together and added that there was enough space to cooperate in all areas.

Prime Minister Wen hopes to visit India later this year to coincide with the completion of the 60th year of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today also met the South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak and had extensive discussions with him on taking forward talks on signing the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, use of nuclear cooperation, civil aviation, space and other economic issues. They also discussed G20 issues and agreed to work together on the issues. They also discussed ways to implement decisions already taken on core issues between the two countries, NSA Menon said.
