Independent Meghalaya MLA joins NCP

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Jan 15 - Independent legislator Saleng Sangma today resigned from Meghalaya Assembly and formally joined Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Sangma tendered his resignation at the Assembly Secretariat here. He would head the NCP in Meghalaya after its president and former Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai recently quit the party and joined BJP.

The legislator from Gambegre, Garo Hills, said it has been left to him now to rebuild the party and said the sitting legislator from South Tura constituency is in talks with NCP and might join the party.

He ruled out any alliance with any party during the upcoming election. NCP has a clean image and is not against any caste, creed or community, Sangma said.

Lashing out at BJP, Sangma said, the party has a Hindutva agenda. In an indirect reference to Shullai, he added: though some tribal people have joined BJP, they will be always be put in the last bench.
