Independent MCLA joins BPF

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, July 21 - Atin Hajong, who won the Manas-Serfang seat in Chirang district as an Independent candidate supported by four non-Bodo groups during the BTC polls, is presently facing a volley of protest from his supporters after he joined the BPF recently at No. 2 Bishnupur in Chirang district.

The All Assam Bengali Youth Students Federation, All BTAD Minority Students Union, Biswajit Ray-led All Koch-Rajbongshi Students Union and Oboro Suraksha Samiti together projected Atin Hajong as an Independent contender for the Manas-Serfang seat reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidate during the BTC polls.

Hajong won the seat by defeating his rival BPF candidate Subash Basumatary by 7,828 votes and became the youngest MCLA in BTC.

All his well-wishers and supporters were shocked when he joined the BPF at a public meeting at Bishnupur in the district. However, Hajong reasoned that unless he joins the BPF, he cannot perform any welfare works for the people of his constituency as an Opposition MCLA. He told the media that he decided to join the party after taking the nod from his supporters and common people of the constituency.

However, leaders of non-Bodo groups claimed that Hajong joined the party without taking their consent.

Most of the voters of Manas-Serfang are unhappy with Hajong for his betrayal and have lost faith in him. Many voters believe that Hajong has joined the BPF for personal gains.
