Independence has no meaning for indigenous peoples of Assam

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 14 - Independence has no meaning for the indigenous peoples of Assam. The injustice meted out to them by the Government of India has generated this feeling among them, said the Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha in a statement here today.

The rulers of India have made 1971 the cut-off year for determination and detection of illegal migrants in Assam, even as the deadline for the purpose in the rest of the country is 1951. This is one of the glaring examples of the discrimination done against the indigenous peoples of Assam, said the Mahasangha in its statement signed by its working president Matiur Rahman.

But, the Mahasangha said, as per Article 370 of the countrys Constitution, the Union government is duty bound to protect Assam and her people from external aggression. But, it has not at all bothered to carry out this responsibility, and as a consequence, Assam has now become the grazing yard for illegal migrants.

The armed forces, being empowered by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, have also been resorting to reckless killing of indigenous youths here, the Mahasangha alleged.
