Independence Day celebrations in Assam

GUWAHATI, Aug 17 � Reports of the celebration of the 64th Independence Day in different parts of the State, filed by correspondents, are still pouring in.

DIBRUGARH: Assam Power, Commerce and Industries Minister Pradyut Bordoloi unfurled the Tricolour at the Chowkidinghee Ground on Sunday.

Bordoloi also led the swahid tarpan at the adorned and fortified ground and Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner GD Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arabinda Kalita followed. Defying diktats of the banned outfits, the celebration at the venue was attended by a large assembly of people including women and children. Fleets of the Army and the CRPF were also part of the grand celebration.

Addressing the congregation, Bordoloi recalled the supreme sacrifices made by the freedom fighters of the State and the country and called upon the youths and students to carry the country towards peace and prosperity. �Do not bow to the diktats of the militants who have no concern for the well-being and progress of the nation. Be instruments of peace and work for development,� he said.

Freedom fighters and senior citizens of the district were also felicitated during the function.

JORHAT: Hoisting the Tricolour at the 64th Independence Day function at the Jorhat Court Field here on Sunday, Prithivi Majhi, Assam Labour and Water Resources Minister, said, ��Violence and terrorism are not the means to solve social problems. Discussion and negotiation are effective ways to deal with national problems��.

Majhi said that Assam would progress if all the militant outfits renounced violence and sit for talks with the Government. The minister also received the guard of honour from the contigents of the Assam Police, CRPF, CISF, Home Guards, NCC and Scouts and Guides at the venue.

UDALGURI: In Udalguri town, SS Meenaxi Sundaram, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district, hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of a huge gathering of school and college students, civilians and security personnel. He also took the guard of honour presented by the school children from various schools and security forces including the SSB. Reports of celebration of Independence Day in a peaceful atmosphere came from Orang, Kalaigaon, Harisinga, Tangla, Khoirabari, Mazbat and Rowta areas of the district.

TEOK: The main function of the Independence Day was held at Teok High School field where the Tricolour was unfurled by Tapan Kumar Gohain, circle officer, Teok Revenue Circle. The function was attended by a large number of people including freedom fighters and school students.

HAILAKANDI: The Parliamentary Secretary (Finance), Ajit Singh hoisted the Tricolour in Hailakandi. Singh paid tribute to the martyrs and spoke about the welfare schemes of the State Government launched for the public.

BONGAIGAON: DC Shantanu P Gotmare unfurled the national flag and delivered a short speech on the I-Day. He highlighted government schemes to denote the progress of the country. In Chirang district, at Kajalgaon Sadar, P & RD Minister Chandan Brahma hoisted the flag and highlighted Government schemes in his speech.

Jamugurihat: In spite of the boycott call given by various outfits like the ULFA, the 64th Independence Day was celebrated with pomp and gaity at Jamugurihat on Sunday. In the 12th Assam Police Battalion headquarters at Kusumtola, Jamugurihat, the commandant of the battalion, Bhakta Bahadur Chetry unfurled the national tricolour and took the salute of the police jawans and NCC cadets of THB College in the ceremonial parade.

Bihpuria: The 64th Independence Day was celebrated at Bihpuria on Sunday with a daylong programme. The main function was held in front of the Bihpuria town committee office where circle officer Satyajit Chetia hoisted the national flag.

Pandu: The 64th anniversary of India�s Independence was celebrated by the West Guwahati branch of Bharat Vikas Parishad at Gokul Niwas premises near Adabari Tiniali.

Ghograpar: The 64th Independence Day was observed peacefully at various places in and around the Ghograpar circle in Nalbari district. The National Tricolour was hoisted at Block Development office, Burigog Barbhag, Ghograpar, Sub-deputy collector office, Ghograpar, Telecom office, Ghograpar, Ghograpar Primary Health Centre etc. and non-government offices and government institutions.

Karimganj: Unfurling the Tricolour here at the Govt HS School playgrund, the Excise and Border Area development minister Gautam Roy called upon the outfits to give up arms and to join in the main stream of the nation.

Dergaon: Along with the other parts of the State the 64th Independance Day was observed with great enthusiasm at Dergaon. The central programme was held at Naren Sarmah memorial field where the Tri-colour was hoisted by Dhiraj Das, the circle officer, Dergaon.

The day was also observed at the Dergaon police complex and the tri-colour was hoisted by DIG, TAP Sarat Kr Phukan at Police Training Stadium. The Tri-colour was also hoisted at Dergaon Sahitya Sabha, Dergaon Sports Association, Dergaon Town club along with the other educational institutions.

Gauripur: Amid tight security, the 64th Independence Day was observed at Dhubri along with the rest of the State Dr Nazrul Islam, Minister, Food & Civil Supplies hoisted the National Flag amid a large number of students, teachers and officials of the district. He also took the salute of the police, NCC and the Scouts & Guides.

Dhekiajuli: Thousands of people participated in the I-Day programme which was held at Town Lower basic Primary School here. Romesh Chandra Bora, senior journalist, paid tribute to the martyrs of Dhekiajuli. Manoj Kumar Sikaria, circle officer, Dhemiajuli revenue circle, hoisted the flag which was followed by a cultural programme presented by the students of the Netaji Vidya Mandir and Vivekananda Bidyapith.

Tangla: The national flag was unfurled by Dithakananda Hazarika, circle officer, Harishinga Revenue Circle at the playground of Tangla Higher Secondary School amidst a large gathering. Students of different educational institutions took part in the march past while cultural items were also performed by the students. In the evening, a play was staged by students at the Bordoloi Bhawan.

Tezpur: The national flag was hoisted at Nehru Maidan, Tezpur by Rihon Doimary, Minister, PHE at the 64th Independence Day function.

Sonitpur district administration felicitated noted stage artist Ghanashyam Borah, Rangapara Press Club for its role in maintaining harmony in the society, photojournalist Shourav Borkotoki for his work in conservation of nature, 15 rank holders of HSLC and HS examinations along with the prize winners of quiz, painting and debate competitions.

Kalgachia: The nation tricolour was unfurled by Jania MLA Abdul Khaleque at the Kalgachai CHC playground. On the other hand, the flag was hoisted by Kalgachia CO Junu Das Saikia in front of her office. BDO of Ruposi Development Block Jaijuddin hoisted the flag at his office and Ruposi CDPO Aroti Devi hoisted the national flag at her office.

KOHORA: The 64th Independence Day was celebrated at Bokakhat Public field with much funfare. Parliamentary secretary Bibekananda Doloi hoisted the Tricolour. Assam police and school children participated in the parade.

Bilasipara: The 64th Independence Day was also celebrated at Bilasipara Sub-division in Dhubri district. Bilasipara SDO(Civil) Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Bilasipara, Dhrubajyoti Das, unfurled the Tricolour. He also took the salute of the march-past.
