SILCHAR, Oct 10 - While a group of Muslim youths from Sonai area of Cachar district extended cordial hands to strengthen communal bonds this Durga Puja by distributing drinking water to puja revellers, 57-year-old Abdus Subhan Laskar, an employee of the Inland Water Transport shared his experience of Durga Puja immersion with The Assam Tribune.
Seen offering holy Namaz inside MV Bhuvan, the steamer boat used for immersion of the idols of Goddess Durga on Vijaya Dashami at Sadarghat, Abdus Subhan Laskar has been the man anchoring the steamer boat over river Barak for over a decade.
�It has been a telling experience for me for all these years. Besides immersion on Dashami day, many idols of Biswakarma have been brought to my boat for crossing to the other end. Also, many devotees have hired my boat for immersing idols of Goddess Manasha,� said Laskar.
It may be mentioned here that Laskar, who knows the pattern of water level by the back of his hand, keeps a close eye on the water level during idol immersion and guides the adjustments accordingly.
Interestingly, while expressing his views, Laskar shared his concerns on the river pollution.
However, he was quick to comment on the latest step taken by the Cachar Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri to pick up the idols within 100 metres of immersion point.
