Inclusion of Moran in Dibrugarh demanded

By Bureau

DIBRUGARH, Jan 4 - Members of several leading social organisations have resolved to submit a memorandum before the State Government to re-draw the proposed Moran civil subdivision and place it under Dibrugarh district. The local population of Moran has expressed satisfaction that the government has finally agreed to concede the long demanded Moran civil subdivision.

A joint meeting of the Moran units of the AASU, AJYCP, AASAA, Chattra Mukti Sangram Samiti, BJP, All Assam Minority Students Union, All Assam Chutia Students Union, Khowang Block Congress Committee, Ahom Sena, Moran Press Club, and others was held on Saturday at the Moran PWD inspection bungalow. The meeting was addressed by Dr Jatin Chutia of the Moran Mahkuma Action Committee. He said that the people of a part of Tingkhong, Lengeri, Khowang, Moran, Khaloighugu, Sepon, Dekhari etc., have been demanding the Moran civil subdivision for several years.

In 1979, the then DR Kohli Committee had recommended the constitution of the Moran civil subdivision by including areas both in Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts. Dr Chutia said this view has the support of the local population, as a single cohesive unit under Dibrugarh district is what the locals want. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced on New Year Day this year that the Moran civil subdivision would be in Sivasagar district. However, it is now clear that the local population want the subdivision in Dibrugarh district by including portions of Sivasagar district.

An earlier meeting, held in 1990 at Sonari at the advise of the Sivasagar district administration, had also resolved to transfer some revenue and police areas in Sivasagar district to Dibrugarh district to facilitate formation of the Moran civil subdivision under Dibrugarh district.
