Incessant rains trigger flash floods at Diphu, West Karbi Anglong

DIPHU, Oct 27 - Incessant rainfall across the hills has caused floods in several valley areas of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong district since early morning today. Steady precipitation in the catchments of river Dhansiri and Kopili have inundated vast areas of Bokajan subdivision and basin of Kheroni, Baithalangso and adjoining areas.

Four relief camps have been set up by the district administration in Bokajan�s affected areas. Donkamukam-Tumpreng road has been closed due to total inundation by Kopili river. Flash flood in Diphu river has submerged maximum low-lying areas of Diphu town affecting many business establishments and slum areas. Playing area of the newly constructed Karbi Anglong Sports Association stadium has totally sunk. The overflooded Diphu river has flooded densely populated areas of the town within a few hours.

According to victims, water level started rising around 5.30 am and within a few hours overwhelmed the main market area, Sitalabari, Sibbari, Sarthey Colony, Stadium road, Harilal basti and vast part of the town. Till now, around 20,000 people have been affected and large quantities of merchandise stored in warehouse have damaged. Till filing of this report, water levels have not receded. Police, staff of Diphu municipality and other concerned authority have assessed the extent of damage and have mobilised relief operations.

KAAC CEM, Tuliram Ronghang and Haren Sing Bey, MP visited the flash flood-affected area of Diphu town today. Ronghang and Bey asked the administration to take prompt measures and to provide adequate facility to the affected people.
