Incessant rains submerge Boro crops at Gargara

By Correspondent

MIRZA, June 5 A series of crop failures have hit the farming community hard, and this time, making matters worse, incessant rains in the past couple of days have inundated their land under Boro cultivation in different parts of south Kamrup.

At Gargara, a backward village under West Guwahati constituency, incessant rains have damaged the Bodo paddy under cultivation as the standing crops submerged.

Practising farming in more than 100 bighas of land by forming samabais and self-help groups, the marginal farmers have suffered huge setbacks due to the crop failure.

Gargara Parishad Samabai Samitee, Gargara Field Management Samitee, Gargara Koibartapara watershed SHG and other groups have suffered the damage. With the rainfall since the last few days, the preparations for reaping the harvest have been affected as the crops have gone under water lamented a group of farmers.

Meanwhile, braving the flash floods, a few farmers reaped the standing crop using country boat.

A few, on the otherhand, have kept the hurriedly cut stacks of paddy in the bamboo-made stand which have been erected in the flooded area. We are expecting dry conditions so that the harvested paddy stacks get adequate sunshine, a woman, who was guarding the harvested stacks, said.

In the low-lying areas in various parts of the Palasbari and Chhaygaon constituencies, some farmers were seen cutting the standing crops under water.
