AIZAWL, June 12 - Incessant rainfall since Monday morning has triggered floods and landslides in various parts of Mizoram. The two national highways and other State highways linking Aizawl and the second capital city of Lunglei have been blocked by landslides at multiple locations.
In Aizawl, a two-storeyed house at Nursery Veng locality collapsed due to landslide, leaving eight family members injured. Four have been rushed to the Aizawl Civil Hospital for proper treatment, while the rest have been given first aid.
The World Bank-funded road linking Aizawl and Lunglei and most parts of southern Mizoram have been blocked by landslides at nearly four locations.
The major highway linking Aizawl and Lengpui Airport has also been blocked by a huge landslide at Hunthar locality in southern Aizawl. All traffic is being diverted to an alternative road. Landslides, rock falls and collapse of retaining walls have caused roadblocks in many other parts of the hill town.
While efforts are on to clear the landslides, the continuous downpour is causing hindrances to the operations. Torrential rains have also caused floods in several low-lying areas of Mizoram.
Reports reaching here said the southern Tuipui river has reached the danger level and already submerged 10 houses at Tlabung town near Bangladesh in Lunglei district. �People of another 20 houses have to be evacuated for fear that the rising waters will submerge their houses,� sources said.
Elsewhere in the State, several parts of Thenzawl town in central Mizoram have been submerged by the rising waters of the Lau river and most parts of Zawlnuam village in western Mizoram are also submerged.
In Sairang, about 30 km from Aizawl, at least 20 houses have been vacated and more than ten houses have already been submerged by the deluge. The waters have kept rising as the rains continued.
Disaster management and rehabilitation teams and the State�s biggest NGO � Young Mizo Association (YMA) � are engaged in cleaning up the rubble and helping the people affected by the landslides.
